What sits underneath the paving matters

A patio is only as reliable as the preparation beneath it.

We assess the existing ground, levels, access and drainage before deciding how the area should be excavated and prepared.

Sub-base construction, falls, edge restraints and the laying method all need to suit the paving and the site.

Because HDL carries out the groundwork and drainage in-house, those practical details are considered as part of the installation from the beginning.

Good paving needs to manage water as well as look right. Falls, finished levels and drainage all need to be considered before the surface is laid, particularly around doors, walls and changes in level.

We plan these details into the build so water is directed where it should go and the finished patio remains practical in everyday use.

Porcelain paving

Porcelain offers a clean, consistent finish with strong durability and relatively low maintenance. It is especially well suited to contemporary gardens and homeowners who want a refined surface without regular sealing or intensive upkeep.

Natural stone

Natural stone brings variation in tone and texture, making it a strong choice for traditional or character properties. Each slab is different, so the finished patio has a more natural, established feel.

Sandstone

Sandstone is a versatile natural paving option with a broad range of colours and textures. It works well in both traditional and more relaxed garden settings and can soften the transition between hard landscaping and planting.

Block paving

Block paving can be useful for smaller terraces, paths, edging and areas where a more structured pattern is wanted. It can also help define different zones within a wider garden layout.

Our patio design & installation process

The surface is what people see. The setting-out is what makes it feel right.

Step 1

Understand the space

We look at how you want to use the patio, how it connects with the house and garden, and what needs to improve.

Step 2

Agree the layout & material

We consider paving options, dimensions, levels, access and any adjoining landscaping before finalising the direction.

Step 3

Prepare the ground

The area is excavated and prepared for the agreed construction, including the necessary levels, sub-base and drainage.

Step 4

Install & finish

The paving, edging, steps and surrounding details are completed by our team under the supervision of the site foreman.

Would definitely recommend Hertfordshire Drives and Landscapes. They replaced an old patio with porcelain tiles and installed a new path. Tom, Zach and Will were an excellent team, nothing was too much trouble and Tom suggested minor enhancements to our project which improved the overall finish.
