A driveway is an important part of the wider entrance to your home. HDL can bring together parking, paths, landscaping, fencing, walls and planting so the frontage works as one considered space.

That might mean creating a clearer route to the front door, retaining planting alongside additional parking or renewing tired boundaries.

What sits underneath your driveway matters

Once a new driveway is complete, much of the work responsible for its performance is hidden.

Before laying the finished surface, we assess the existing ground, levels, vehicle use and proposed construction. The appropriate excavation, sub-base, edge restraints and other preparation can then be determined for that particular site. This underlying structure spreads vehicle loads and provides the stable foundation the finished driveway relies upon.

It is why we do not approach a driveway as simply laying a new material over an existing area.

Good preparation is not an optional extra. It is part of the driveway.

Choose the right surface for your home

The best driveway surface depends on how you use the space, the character of the property, drainage requirements and the level of maintenance you want.

Resin-bound driveways

A smooth, consistent finish with a wide choice of aggregate colours. Resin suits homeowners looking for a clean appearance and relatively straightforward maintenance, provided the underlying base is correctly prepared.

Block paving driveways

A versatile choice available in a wide range of colours, sizes and laying patterns. Block paving works well with both traditional and contemporary homes and can be repaired locally if individual blocks become damaged.

Gravel driveways

A natural looking option that can suit traditional properties and larger frontages particularly well. Good preparation, suitable aggregate and strong edge restraints are important for keeping the surface stable and manageable.

Permeable paving

A driveway system designed to allow rainwater to pass through the surface and underlying construction.

It can be a practical option where drainage and surface-water management are important considerations.

Natural stone driveways

Natural stone brings variation in colour, texture and character. It can work especially well with older properties, but the stone needs to be suitable for vehicle use and installed on the correct construction beneath.

Concrete driveways

A durable and practical surface for regular vehicle use. Careful edging, layout and integration with surrounding paths or planting can help concrete feel more considered as part of the wider frontage.

Driveway drainage considered from the start

A new or enlarged driveway changes the way rainwater moves across the front of a property. We consider surface falls, thresholds, surrounding ground and existing drainage before deciding how water should be managed. Depending on the property and chosen surface, that might include permeable paving construction, directing water towards a suitable permeable area or incorporating drainage as part of the driveway design.

Planning and drainage are closely connected. Government guidance allows permeable surfacing, or surfaces where water is directed to drain naturally within the property, to be treated differently from larger impermeable front driveways that simply discharge runoff elsewhere.

Getting this right at the design stage is preferable to trying to correct standing water after the driveway has been installed.

Finished properly at every edge

A driveway rarely sits on its own. It has to meet paths, garages, gates, walls, lawns and existing landscaping, often across different levels.

We plan those junctions carefully, using well-set edging, tidy transitions and considered levels so everything connects cleanly rather than looking pieced together afterwards.

It is often these smaller details that make the finished driveway feel properly built and part of the property as a whole.

Our driveway design & build process

A well-built driveway starts below the surface. We plan the levels, drainage, access and materials carefully so every stage of the build works towards a practical, lasting finish.

Step 1

Site assessment

We assess the existing driveway, access, parking requirements, levels, drainage and the relationship between the driveway and the rest of the frontage.

Step 2

Layout & materials

We agree the proposed surface, layout, edging and any adjoining paths, walls, fencing or landscaping required as part of the project.

Step 3

Ground preparation

Existing materials are removed where required before the area is excavated, prepared and constructed for the agreed driveway system.

Step 4

Installation & finish

Our team completes the surface, drainage, edging and finishing details under the supervision of the site foreman.
